Understanding THE REASONS FOR Miscarriages

Miscarriage Prevention: A woman cradles her pregnant stomach.

A miscarriage is the loss of pregnancy before the 20th week of pregnancy. Most clinically recognized miscarriages occur between the seventh and 12th week after a woman’s last menstrual period. The vast majority of women who have experienced a miscarriage go on to have a healthy pregnancy. Recurrent miscarriage or recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is defined as two or more consecutive pregnancy losses. Even women who have suffered multiple pregnancy losses have a good chance of carrying a baby to terms, especially with support from acupuncture and lifestyle changes. Recent studies show that women who receive regular supportive care during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy can dramatically reduce their number of unexplained miscarriages.

Possible causes for recurrent pregnancy loss can range from hormonal disturbances and womb irregularities to genetics and immune disorders. Other known causes include infection, abnormalities of the uterus or cervix, smoking, substance abuse, exposure to environmental or industrial toxins, diabetes, thyroid disease, and autoimmune disease. Age also plays a factor, with older women more likely to miscarry than younger. Recurrent miscarriage may also be linked with blood clotting disorders.

Symptoms occurring with miscarriage typically include:

  • Light to heavy vaginal bleeding

  • Period-type cramping and back pain

  • A discontinuation in pregnancy symptoms like nausea, breast tenderness and fatigue

Our Approach TO MISCARRIAGES

At Blue Ova, our team works with each patient individually to find the underlying cause for multiple losses so that each patient receives specialized care. We offer a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments including acupuncture, Chinese herbal formulas, dietary counseling and lifestyle suggestions. Utilizing these modalities we help bring the body back into balance, optimize fertility, and decrease the chances of subsequent miscarriage.

In most cases of recurrent pregnancy loss, a combined treatment using both TCM and Western diagnostics gives the best results.  We guide you through ordering extensive testing and do a thorough evaluation of your overall health in order to identify any underlying reason for your miscarriage. These tests we recommend may include ones to determine heavy metals, immune disorders, and hormonal imbalances.

MISCARRIAGE Treatment

Studies have shown that a combination of acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, and supplements can help reduce the risk of miscarriage by:

  • Balancing hormons

  • Correcting deficiencies

  • Increasing the blood flow to the ovaries to nourish the developing follicles and create better egg quality and embryos.

  • Increasing blood flow to the testicles to improve sperm quality, optimizing the male’s contribution to embryo quality. This is particularly important in couples undergoing ICSI.

  • Building up the womb lining

  • Supporting implantation

  • Nourishing the developing fetus by improving the blood flow to the placenta and preventing uterine contractions

  • Relaxing the body and reducing stress levels to prevent early uterine contractions

Whether trying to manage symptoms during a miscarriage, regain control of your body after a recent miscarriage, or preparing for the conception process and pregnancy after a miscarriage, Chinese medicine and acupuncture use natural and highly effective processes to encourage and initiate healing.
